Aven had known that the priestess would disapprove of her choice, but she had thought Alfyra would have no option but to accept it passively. She did not expect to be attacked. Of course, she only suspected that it was an attack. It was conceivable that the matron was so shocked by Aven's words that she was distracted, or that the knife slipped in unsteady hands. Whatever the truth, when the time came to incise the Kolys glyph Alfyra turned up the wrong side of Aven's arm and then, instead of scratching, slashed.
