Kort grabbed the bow from the hand of the boy closest to him, snatched an arrow from among several stuck in the ground near them, nocked, and let fly. The boy was much shorter than Kort, the bow shorter than his own, and he handled it clumsily. His arrow skimmed past the animal's flank, parting the shaggy red hair but missing flesh. "Brel!" he shouted frantically, but even as he yelled Brel's arrow sailed past his ear and buried itself in the beast's brow. The harnyx released the child from its jaws, shook its head twice, and fell over on its side.
